The Fox and the Crow

"The Fox and the Crow" is a traditional version of the fable by Aesop. Although very little is actually known about the true origins of Aesop's fables, he has been credited with over 600 of these instructional tales. Subjects of his morals include gratitude, the deceptiveness of appearances, and the necessity of thrift.

A Fox once saw a Crow fly off with a piece of cheese in its beak and settle on a branch of a tree. "That's for me, as I am a Fox," said Master Reynard (the fox), and he walked up to the foot of the tree.

"Good day, Mistress Crow," he cried. "How well you are looking today: how glossy your feathers; how bright your eye. I feel sure your voice must surpass that of other birds, just as your figure does; let me hear but one song from you that I may greet you as the Queen of the Birds."

The Crow lifted up her head and began to caw her best, but the moment she opened her mouth the piece of cheese fell to the ground, only to be snapped up by Master Fox. "That will do," said he. "That was all I wanted. In exchange for your cheese I will give you a piece of advice for the future ---

MORAL: DO NOT TRUST FLATTERERS."

Symbolism of Me

We will be taking a closer look at symbolism this week to better understand it. This week on your kid's blog, find three symbols that help to represent you. Write 2-3 sentences about why you chose each symbol. Find a picture of each and include it in your post.

For example, I might choose a carton of Brighams mocha chip icecream, a soccer ball, and an apple.  

The icecream represents me because it is my favorite icecream. I am absolutely obsessed with it! All my friends and family tell me how they  think of me whenever they see that icecream in the grocery store! The soccer ball is also another symbol because I have played soccer all my life and it has helped shaped me into the strong person I am today! I learned about teamwork and perseverance! The skills and qualities I gained from playing the sport are a huge part of me today. Lastly, I chose an apple. This is representative of the fact that I am a teacher. A teacher is a huge part of who I am as well--- it is not just a job for me. It's my life!

First Memory

We have been studying poetry on and off for quite some time now. Much of poetry deals with self reflection and self expression. I want you to dig deep into your memory bank and try to recall your earliest memory. Describe what occurred. Discuss (about) how old you were and what was going on at the time. Incorporate sensory language to clue your readers in on what you were feeling, seeing, tasting, touching and hearing at the time.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could

Chronological Writing

In our conversations with others, we present our ideas in a logical order. This way, we make sense to our listeners. Typically, we relate events in the order they occurred, so our listeners don't become confused as they follow our ideas. 

In writing, the pattern we present our ideas in is called organization. Writers need to know about organizational patterns because readers expect what they read to make sense logically.

 

 The most common way to organize writing is called chronological order. Chronological order is the order in which the events occurred, from first to last.This type of organization is especially effective if you are describing a process, relaying a series of actions, or telling a story.

This week you must write a paragraph (between 5-10 sentences)  in chronological order. You may choose from the following topics:

1. Two people met, fell in love, and got married

2. A young person discovered a particular sport, practiced/played it throughout their life and now plays professionally

3. The weather change from January to July

4. The first day of 7th grade

5. Summarizing the plot of your favorite movie or book.

Pick a Poem

We have been spending a significant amount of time on poetry. This week, I want you to find a poem that you admire. Whether it's a classic childhood poem, a newly discovered poem, or a poem that we have read in class, choose one and copy and paste it into your post.

Def Poetry

The video below is an example of "Def Poetry." The poet performing, "Shihan" is  most commonly known from HBO's Def Poetry. For the past 15 years, Shihan has been co-hosting Da' Poetry Lounge, the nation's largest open mic night held in Hollywood, CA. A native of New York’s Lower East Side and a current resident and local legend of Los Angeles, Shihan is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic spoken word artists of our generation.

What is Def Poetry?

"Def poetry is a form of poetry typically based on urban culture and themes, often with an expressed focus on the African American experience. While not defined purely by racial themes or poets, and anyone of any race or cultural background may compose such works, there is certainly a precedent for African American poets in this art form. This type of poetry typically serves to illustrate the experiences and lifestyle of those who grow up in urban environments. Def poetry can take a number of different forms, depending on the poet, though it typically expresses personal opinions and life stories." Source

This week take a look again at the video we viewed in class and react to it. What is your opinion of this example of Def Poetry? Do you like it or dislike it? Why? Give reasons to support your opinion. In your response also be sure to explain one example of a poetic device (metaphor, simile, alliteration, personification etc.) that Shihan uses.

Looking at Lyrics

As we continue to learn about powerful writing I want you to consider what makes a piece of writing so interesting. How will you truly capture your audience's attention? I think it may be helpful if we think about music first. What makes a song so catchy or engaging? 

This week I want you to think about one of your favorite (appropriate) songs. Look up the lyrics. (AZ Lyrics is usually a good site to do so). Examine the lyrics. 

Are they powerful? Are they catchy? Why do you think so? Is there figurative language in it? (Metaphors, Similes, Personification etc...)  What does the song mean?

"The Only Thing to Fear is Fear Itself"

This week we will be starting to read the screenplay,  The Monsters are Due on Maple Street, by Rod Serling. In the play we will discuss just how powerful fear, prejudice and suspicion can be!

Snowmagination

The Power We Have
